Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes Tottenham Hotspur fans would be more devastated than Sol Campbell’s switch to Arsenal, should Mauricio Pochettino accept the head coach role at Chelsea. The 46-year-old has helped transform Spurs into a regular top-four side in recent seasons but his future is apparently uncertain beyond the summer.
As such, reports have linked him with a shock move across town to Chelsea, and Cascarino feels this could have a drastic effect on the Spurs faithful, he said: “Would this be worse than Sol Campbell going from Spurs to Arsenal?I feel that a lot of Tottenham fans would think it would be.He’s their manager!
“With everything he’s done in the last few years at Spurs – he’s created and put together a fantastic team – and then he’s picked up and just off across West London at a club like Chelsea? I think Spurs fans would be absolutely devastated. With all he’s got in his locker and considering how well he’s done, I think Tottenham fans would be so upset.”
Chelsea are yet to announce the dismissal of manager Antonio Conte but according to reports, the Italian is likely to be released from his contract this month regardless of the club’s result in the FA Cup final against Manchester United. The Blues struggled to challenge for the Premier League title during the second season under Conte and the failure to finish in the Champions League positions is expected to emerge as one of the prime reasons behind the Italian’s departure.
Aside from this, Conte has also had issues regarding the club’s transfer policy this term and his regular complaints in public are deemed to have not gone well with the hierarchy. Apart from Pochettino, Napoli’s Maurizio Sarri has also been linked with the head coach role of late, though his current employers are desperate for him to stay.
