Speaking to Football Italia, Drogba said: “I am not remotely surprised [by Ronaldo transfer]. I find it as a perfect, exciting and such a good choice that I was about to do it, too. I thought I had already joined a Serie A club and we were down to the details, but then everything evaporated. Don’t ask me the club, there’s no point opening that up now. In any case, it was more than just an offer and I was very interested, so I perfectly understand Ronaldo’s desire to play in Serie A.”

Diego Costa Was Chelsea’s Didier Drogba Or Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Former Chelsea defender Ken Monkou believes the Blues’ downfall this season has been partly contributed by Antonio Conte’s decision to offload Diego Costa. The Italian head coach had a bust-up with Costa midway through the previous campaign, and this eventually saw the Spaniard fall out-of-favour at the end of the season.

Costa’s proposed return to Atletico Madrid was constantly pressed thereafter and the Blues finally ended the saga by agreeing to his sale in September 2017. Speaking on the Mail, Monkou suggested that the Blues lost a key figure in the form of Costa, who could be compared to the likes of Drogba and Ibrahimovic – for his presence on the pitch.
